Schema Markup for Services: Help Google Understand What You Sell

Search engines read text, but they understand structure better. Schema markup — structured data added to a page — tells Google explicitly what a page is: a local business, a service with a price range, a frequently asked question. That clarity can earn richer search results, better matching to queries, and a clearer picture of what you actually sell. For service businesses, it is one of the highest-value technical SEO tasks.

The schema types that matter most

For a service business, the core types are LocalBusiness (or a subtype such as HomeAndConstructionBusiness), Service with its name and description, FAQPage for question-and-answer sections, and BreadcrumbList for navigation. Review and aggregate-rating schema matter only if you have genuine, visible reviews to mark up — never invent ratings. Start with LocalBusiness and Service on the pages that earn money, then extend to FAQ where real questions exist.

Implement it cleanly

JSON-LD in the page head is the recommended format: it sits separately from visible content and is easier to maintain than inline markup. Generate it from the same data as the page content, not from a separate copy, so the two cannot drift apart. WordPress SEO plugins can handle common types automatically, but custom services usually need hand-written or template-generated JSON-LD. Keep it accurate: markup must describe content visitors can actually see on the page.

Test before you trust it

Validate every page with Google's Rich Results Test and Search Console's enhancements reports, and fix errors rather than ignoring them — invalid markup is ignored at best and can cause warnings at worst. Re-test after template changes, since a redesign can silently break markup that used to work. Add schema checks to your publishing checklist for new service pages, so new content launches with markup instead of waiting for an audit to catch it.

What schema will not do

Schema does not guarantee rich results, rankings or featured snippets; it makes a page eligible and understandable, and Google decides what to show. It also cannot rescue thin or irrelevant content — a well-marked-up weak page is still a weak page. Treat schema as part of a complete SEO foundation: good content, clear structure, fast pages, and then markup that helps search engines recognise all three.
